Yet the fun of full extension to reach one's goals makes it all worthwhile. Roger Bannister, the first person to run a four-minute mile, claimed that in 'the joy of going all out, I forgot my pain.' His necessary suffering was overshadowed by his pleasure in reaching his goal. For athletes to develop the desire to maximize their potential, their goals must be meaningful.
