All great performances, breakthroughs, and achievements are the result of some form of pain (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual), adversity, sacrifice, and suffering. Yet the fun of full extension to reach one's goals makes it all worthwhile. Roger Bannister, the first person to run a four-minute mile, claimed that in 'the joy of going all out, I forgot my pain.' His necessary suffering was overshadowed by his pleasure in reaching his goal. For athletes to develop the desire to maximize their potential, their goals must be meaningful. [Jerry Lynch]
